Heaney Keenan Funeral Directors

Patsy Heaney, along with his father, started Heaney Funeral directors and passed away in July 2009, below is a brief history of the company and how it has emerged to be one of the biggest Funeral Director Companies in Northern Ireland.

Patsy dedicated his working life to his funeral business in the city and surrounding area, initially with his father Paddy then with JG McArdle and with his brother, Brendan. Patsy was a devoted family man - in 1988, his wife Patricia was killed in a car accident, leaving him to raise and care for their six children, the youngest of whom Declan was then only six years old.

Born and bred in Newry along with a brother and two sisters, both he and his father were initially taxi drivers until they bought a hearse and went into the funeral business, first in Cornmarket and later in Bridge Street.

P&B Heaney - Established in 1974

In 1974, Patsy and Brendan established the firm of P & B Heaney which continued very successfully until the untimely death of Brendan in 2005. The business continues to flourish today in Patrick Street under the direction of Patsy's son Ciaran, having incorporated Keenan's in Banbridge and with the purchase of a funeral home on the Costa del Sol.

Patsy carried out the duties and responsibilities of his work with the utmost discretion, compassion and sensitivity, conducting funerals throughout the Troubles, and many people have borne testimony since his death to the way he brought comfort and solace to the bereaved.

He was particularly proud to work with his sons Ciaran and Declan, as well as seeing a third generation start out in the business through his grandson Conor.
